Upcoming Horror Movies 2013 - Part 1

Well 2012 is almost at an end, and if the world doesn't get destroyed in some Armageddon-type incident later this month it looks like we will be seeing 2013 very soon. So how is the next year shaping up for horror movies? Well scroll on down and take a look, and stay tuned because this is only part 1 of the list and there will be plenty more parts to come.

Release dates are for the US as per IMDb

JOHN DIES AT THE END

This has been showing at festivals throughout 2012 (and garnering some pretty positive reviews) but will finally see a theatrical release on January 25th, 2013.

Synopsis: "It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can't"

HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS

This adaptation stars Jeremy Renner and Famke Janssen and puts a dark spin on the classic children's fairytale. Release date is set for February 7th, 2013.

Synopsis: "In this dark spin on the fairy tale, siblings Hansel and Gretel are a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world"

TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D

Yes, another entry in the franchise and in 3D no less. Is there still some life in the old Leatherface story? We'll find out when it hits theatres on January 4th, 2013.

Synopsis: "After the first massacre in 1974, the townspeople suspected that the Sawyer family were responsible. A vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer house, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family. Decades later a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from her grandmother. she decides to bring her friends along on the road trip to investigate her inheritance. On arrival she uncovers she has inherited a mansion but is yet to uncover the terrors that lurk in the basement below it"

WARM BODIES

Yes it might seem like WARM BODIES is taking the TWILIGHT approach by taking classic horror creatures and adding a sappy love story, but maybe this will turn out to be alright? I really doubt it, but if it interests you take a look at the trailer and prepare as it arrives on February 1st, 2013.

Synopsis: "After a zombie becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his victims, their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world"

CARRIE

Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore star in what will be just one of a LOT of unnecessary remakes coming in the next 12 months. CARRIE will be in theatres on March 15th, 2013.

Synopsis: "Carrie White is a lonely and awkward teen who is constantly bullied at school by her peers, and beaten at home at the hands of her religious mother. But Carrie has a secret: She's been blessed with the terrifying power of telekinesis; and when her peers decide to pull a prank on her at prom, they'll soon learn a deadly lesson: If you play with fire, you get burned"

THE LAST EXORCISM 2: THE BEGINNING OF THE END

Possession / exorcism movies aren't dead yet and THE LAST EXORCISM 2 is out to prove it. I just hope it's better than the abysmal original. Coming to theatres on March 1st, 2013.

Synopsis: "As Nell Sweetzer tries to build a new life after the events of the first movie, the evil force that once possessed her returns with an even more horrific plan"

EVIL DEAD

As much as I dislike the tidal wave of horror remakes of recent years I have to admit I am kind of looking forward to this. Unnecessary? Of course it is, but the trailer makes it look pretty badass. Coming to theatres on April 12th, 2013.

Synopsis: "In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival"

BLACK ROCK

Described as a mix between DELIVERANCE of THELMA & LOUISE, this wilderness survival film stars Katie Aselton, Lake Bell & Kate Bosworth. Release date is set for May 17th, 2013.

Synopsis: "Three childhood friends set aside their personal issues and reunite for a girls' weekend on a remote island off the coast of Maine. One wrong move turns their weekend getaway into a deadly fight for survival"

THE CONJURING

James Wan is a busy guy this year with not only the INSIDIOUS sequel coming out but also this supernatural thriller THE CONJURING. From the brief synopsis it doesn't sound too impressive but hopefully there will be a trailer soon. In theatres July 19th, 2013.

Synopsis: "A family encounters spirits living among them in their New England farmhouse"

HATCHET III

A HATCHET film not directed by Adam Green might irk some fans but it's happening just the same. Kane Hodder returns to play the villain Victor Crowley. No release date as of yet but expect it sometime in 2013.

Synopsis: "A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorising Honey Island Swamp for decades"
